SCHUMANN Trio no.3 Op.110
FITKIN Lens for trio
TOM COULT New Trio (2013) * Premiere
RAVEL Trio in A min
The Fidelio Trio have carved an excellent reputation as much for their exceptional virtuosity as for their promotion of contemporary music. The perform extremely diverse music both nationally and internationally and are constantly commissioning new works from a range of leading international composers.
Two new pieces in tonight’s programme are by composers familiar to our audiences – Graham Fitkin and our former Young composer in Residence, 2011, Tom Coult. They are flanked by the quintessentially romantic third trio by Schumann, full of drama, heroism and tragedy, and Ravel’s exquisite Basque-influenced Trio. Ravel rushed its composition, so keen was he to enlist in the army at the start of World War I. Despite his hurry, it contains some of the most magical moments ever heard in chamber music.
